Part of our job description is thinking outside of the box so naturally when Chad Cornwall of Flower Power Productions approached us about a Dia De Los Muertos styled shoot, we couldn’t wait to put on our thinking sombreros! The holiday is a day dedicated to celebrating deceased loved ones and is filled with whimsical traditions and vibrant colors. Our goal was to stay true to the traditional feel of the celebration in floral, color and stationery but with a sophisticated and modern approach in styling and design. The first no brainer was color, and lots of it! Our favorite way to incorporate color is in floral and Chad did not disappoint. He selected different shapes and textures in vivid colorful blooms – dahlias, roses, marigolds, pincushion, protea and celosia – creating an exotic and rustic combination with a southwestern touch of cacti and succulents. Marigolds were a must as it is believed the blooms guide spirits to their altars using their vibrant colors and scent. Our venue, Las Velas, was the right amount of old world charm without being over powering. Every inch of the space featured character and charm, you could not ask for more.
Continuing with tradition, we incorporated the iconic sugar skull tastefully into the stationery by Nib and Pixel. She mirrored the overall theme of the shoot into the invitation suite – playful yet sophisticated. For the dress, we knew we couldn’t do your average wedding dress but didn’t want it to feel like a costume. In comes Damsel White Label with their black velvet gown. As if an all black dress wasn’t enough drama, that open back took the bridal look to a whole other level. In order to not compete with the dress, we kept hair and makeup simple and channeled an inner Frida – thick brows and a bold lip by Hey Lovely Makeup.
Carla of Whisk Bakery created a festive minimal cake incorporating subtle design from the invitation and bright blooms. Accompanied by traditional Mexican cookies and Tres Leches cupcakes – all that’s missing is the tequila! Salud!
