With Valentines quickly approaching, many men are looking for that grand romantic gesture. Some may feel that the time has come to pop the magical question – but how? When? Where? How can I make it unique and special to us? We will be offering proposal advice and wedding planning tips this Thursday at BHLDN in Highland Village from 3-7pm, alongside floral bouquets and crowns by The Moss and Rose, hand-lettered valentines by The Weekend Type, Sofia Coppola champagne by Francis Ford Coppola and tasty treats by Crave Cupcakes. Come and ask specific questions on how to make your proposal one-of-a-kind and something she will never forget! If you can’t make it out this week, we’ve prepared a few guidelines on the art of proposing! Thanks Alyse French Photography for the lovely engagement photos!

1) Be creative – This is the story she will be retelling long after your wedding day so make every detail count. Think back to special moments you have shared that only she would get – revisit a first date restaurant or take her to a meaningful place, take her somewhere unexpected or somewhere she’s always wanted to go. Make the moment unique to your relationship – write a poem or a song, go see a concert and ask the singer to make a dedication.
2) Be prepared - Proposing is one of the biggest moments in a relationship and can be very nerve-wracking. Plan ahead and don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends and family if it requires detailed coordination. Call her boss to ask for the day off or have a limo pick her up from work, and make reservations weeks in advance. Be prepared but don’t get cold feet if things don’t go exactly according to plan, sometimes those unexpected details are what makes it most unique!

3) Arrange for photography and videography – This is a moment neither of you will ever forget but in the rush of emotions it’s easy to compress the little details. So don’t compromise such a special memory, arrange for a photographer or videographer to hide out and capture the candid moment when her face lights up and she cries “YES!” Trust us, she will be impressed you came up with this idea and it will be one of the most special photos or films you will ever own. Our good friends, Whitney and Alex of Sculpting with Time shared their proposal video with us.
4) Public vs. Private - We know that once you find the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, you want to shout it from the rooftops but be mindful of what she likes and doesn’t like. Don’t do it in a public place if you know that your lady doesn’t like that sort of thing. If she likes her privacy, plan an intimate moment for the two of you and coordinate a surprise celebration with family or friends afterwards. Above all, please don’t propose at a basketball game! ha ha…but really.

5) The Ring – The one piece of jewelry that is unlike any other – a symbol of your commitment to one another and an eternity together. She may have dropped you a few hints here and there about the size, cut and color but we know those topics are like a foreign language to men. Selecting the ring can be a time consuming, stressful and expensive process but it doesn’t have to be. You don’t have to have THE ring right away- you can propose with a temporary ring and then pick out a ring together. It’s not for everyone but sometimes it’s better to have her choose the ring she will wear forever.
6) Be thoughtful - You can dot your I’s and cross your T’s until you are blue in the face, but don’t lose sight of the most important reason you are at this crossroad: love. Think through why you are proposing, and what that means to you and to each other. Marriage is a big, bold and beautiful commitment, make sure you understand that commitment and are ready to take that leap with your forever love.
